µTorrent is a lightweight and efficient BitTorrent client for Windows. Although the application is called “micro torrent” it is also referred to as “utorrent” where “u” is often used as a substitute for the micro symbol (µ).

The following best practice guide sets the location of the directories used by µtorrent (and one or two other minor tweaks). By controlling the location of where files (including torrents), they can be (if required) deleted easily.

Individual Torrent Bandwidth Allocation. This is used when you have a queue of torrent downloads and want to prioritize a specific one. Right-click on the torrent and allocate the bandwidth for better results. Improving the setting and health o your torrent will ensure your high speed. Folx PRO is an excellent torrent search tool - no need to visit multiple torrent websites in a browser to find what you need. One search for all trackers We are sure that Folx is the best torrent search app because it will find torrent files without you leaving the app - enjoy the results from a multitude of trackers at a time.

For example, you download a file (film, book or mp3) on common skin disorders to help you self diagnose a condition you suffer from. The torrent file you download could be called “common-skin-disorders.torrent”. It could be embarrassing to you if other users of the same PC (family or friends) were to stumble across the torrent file or the download itself.

By controlling the location of the various bit torrent elements, it is easier to remove and thereby preserve one’s privacy. The additional benefit is a more organized file structure.

Folder Structure

Torrent Setting For Mac

Flash for chromium mac. The following steps are recommended to set-up a good file structure:

Download Torrents For Mac

  • Identify a suitable location on the PC that has the storage capacity to cater for the files that are to be downloaded. Most people only have a single hard drive, which simplifies things. Nonetheless, identify an easy-to-access location for files and create a directory or folder.
  • Within this folder create a folder called “torrents” to store all the torrent files. Secondly, create one called “wip” to store files which are in progress (hence the acronym wip, work in progress).
  • Within the torrent folder create 3 additional folders called “wip”, “complete” & “new”.

The recommended folder structure is therefore:

For the image above, the example <Folder Path> is C:UsersShadow.

Reasoning

Creating a dedicated folder, which is easy to identify separates it from other downloads. The actual files when downloading will be stored in the “wip” folder. Once complete, these files will be automatically moved back into the main directory (uT), giving easy access to downloaded files.

In terms of managing torrents; those in progress will be stored in “wip”, complete ones will be stored in the “complete” folder. If the user does not specify a location for these torrents, the default location is normally buried in a hidden folder . This will give the user the false impression that these files no longer exist.

The creation of a “new” folder saves time. It means that the user can store torrent files in a single location such that when utorrent is launched, it automatically starts downloading. So why not just open utorrent as and when a torrent file is downloaded? Many of us are increasingly constrained on how much we can download and when we can download. Increasingly, people are running bit torrent clients, late at night when there are normally no (or less restrictive) constraints.

To support that type of behaviour, it is recommended that the user identifies torrent files and stores them in a single location. When the time is right, utorrent can be launched to obtain the files.

Additional Tweaks

Two additional tweaks to aid the user. The first is appending “.!ut” to incomplete files. This is recommended because when downloading multi-part files e.g. a collection of mp3s, photos, text files etc, then completed files are easy to identify if you can’t wait to examine the contents. To enable this feature click on:

In the section titled “When Downloading” select the checkbox that states “Append .!ut to incomplete files”.

In addition, it is also recommended that protocol encryption is also enabled to prevent unauthorised discrimination against bit torrent traffic. This aims to prevent your ISP from reducing the speed of your downloads when using bit torrent, in favour of other traffic. More information on the topic is available here and here.

Torrent Setting For Macbook Pro

This guide was constructed using µtorrent 2.2 on Windows 7 (64-bit) but this will work on nearly all versions of µtorrent as similar fields exist for the location of folders.

Before adding a new torrent task it is recommended to customize torrent download/upload settings. Choose “Torrent” tab in Preferences:

  1. “Enable DHT Network” option enables the Distributed Hash Table. This option, if checked, permits you to connect to peers not only from the tracker you get a torrent file from, but also to peers, downloading this torrent file from anywhere on the net and connected to DHT network. This option helps to find peers while a tracker is down and to provide trackerless torrent files downloading.
  2. “Enable NAT-PMP” option permits to enable an NAT Port Mapping Protocol used to automatically configure NAT (Network Address Translation) on your network. When your machine is behind an NAT router, it usually has an IP address that is different from your IP address on the Internet. In this case parties outside the private network are not able to respond to you. The router changes your internal IP address to the outside one. This process is called “Network Address Translation”.
  3. “Enable Local Peer Discovery” option allows Folx to attempt to discover local peers. If disabled, only external peers will be discovered.
  4. Global maximum number of connections field defines the maximum number of connections that Folx can make at any given time in all active torrent downloads.
  5. Maximum number of connections per torrent field defines the maximum number of peers that Folx can connect to at any given moment for each torrent download.
  6. Maximum number of upload slots per torrent sets the number of peers you upload to for one torrent at any given time. The fewer slots you make available the faster you will upload to each peer. Making more slots available will increase your chances of getting data. But making too many slots available may make many clients blacklist you because you are uploading to them too slowly.
  7. Incoming TCP port is the listening port that accepts incoming connections. It permits external BitTorrent clients to reach your client. Each port possesses a unique number called the “TCP port number”. The default port number is 14082. You may want to specify another one instead, for example, if the port is busy for some reason. If you are not sure what port number to specify, ask your system administrator.
Note: If you have a router, you will have to set up port forwarding which helps you open a port in your router for outside connections. If you have a firewall, you will have to add the port to the exceptions list which will permit the port to bypass your firewall.

The port number you’ve set will be saved after Folx restart, unless “Randomize port on launch” option is checked.

  8. You may also try to apply “Randomize” option. It is used to select a random port number for the listening port. Check “Randomize port on launch” option to change a port number each time Folx is started.
Note: If you have a router or firewall, access to a randomly chosen port may be denied by a router or firewall for security reasons.
Note: UPnP and NAT-PMP port forwarding provides automatic connection, without your manual intervention. So, if you have UPnP or NAT-PMP enabled, you will have to disable them in case you want to select a random port number for the listening port.
  9. Stop seeding at ratio: This option permits to stop seeding torrents as soon as ratio reaches the specified value. Forced stop of seeding might be useful when you need the bandwidth for something else (for example, start downloading a queued torrent) or when you simply get limited bandwidth from your Internet provider. By default, “Stop seeding at ratio” option is disabled.
Note: When “Stop seeding at ratio” checkbox is ticked, the ratio value, specified here, will be applied to all torrent tasks in Downloads list (provided “Global Settings” option is ticked in the context menu). Read Seed torrent files section for more details.
